Your Students Notice of Admission A Parents Guide Depending on whether this is your first or last child about to embark on their college adventure, your reaction may range anywhere from this: to this: Regardless of where youre at (or if youre somewhere in between), your child has been admitted and you deserve a big congratulations! This is such an exciting time. Between the applications, essay writing, and (im)patiently waiting for decisions to be posted, it’s been a long process. So, let’s break down the next steps your child needs to take before enrolling on campus. First and most important, your child will need to log in to myIllini in order to access their Admitted Student Checklist. This provides a personalized list of everything your child needs to complete before classes start in the fall. You can view a static version of the checklist on our website, and Ill provide some helpful tips regarding many of its steps below.  Accept/Decline First things first: Accept or decline the offer of admission. Your child can do this within their myIllini account, and it needs to be done before moving on to other steps. The last day your child can accept their offer of admission is May 1. Pro Tips: Did your child pay our application fee even though they qualify for a fee waiver? Have your childs counselor send a fee waiver form to us now. This will waive the enrollment and housing fees as well, so its still worth sending in. Before your child accepts or declines their offer, come visit us! Starting in January, well have visit days specifically for admitted students. Whether your family has been to campus before or not, visiting as an admitted student can help your child decide if this is the right fit.  NetID Computing Your child will need their University Identification Number and the Activation Code to set up a NetID and NetID password. Both pieces of information can be found in myIllini. The NetID is something your child will use very frequently on campus. It doubles as a university email address, so it needs to be something easy to rememberâ€"and not embarrassing!  Financial Aid If your child hasn’t filled out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), I encourage them to do so now. Note that financial aid packages will not arrive with their notice of admission. This information will arrive in February or March. If you have questions about Financial Aid, youll want to contact our  Office of Student Financial Aid.  Housing As a freshman on campus, your child is required to live on campusâ€"but they have plenty of options! The two types of housing are University Housing  (owned by the university) and Private Certified Housing  (privately owned and operated but approved by the university for all students). The priority deadline for University Housing is May 15, so if your child decides to go that route, make sure they sign up by that date.  The process to sign up for Private Certified Housing is unique to the specific hall you choose. If your child decides to live in a  Private Certified hall, youll want to contact that hall on an individual basis. Because Private Certified  halls fill on a first-come, first-served basis, deadlines to guarantee space vary.  Registration New Student Registration is where your child will meet with an academic advisor and register for fall classes. Registration dates typically occur in June, and sign-up opens in March. If your child lives within 500 miles of campus, theyll be asked to come to campus to register. If they live more than 500 miles away, theyll have the option to register online. Pro Tips: Regardless of how far away you live, if youre able to come to campus, I highly, highly recommend that you do! Its a much better experience for your child to meet face-to-face with an advisor, check out their residence hall, and meet future classmates! Make sure your child gets their iCard (student ID card) when they come for registration. The lines will be much shorter than when they move in during the fall, and they’ll need it to check in to their residence hall.  Dont let this happen to you and your student when you move them in:  College Registration Homework Your child needs to complete their registration homework at least two weeks prior to their registration date. It’s not homework in the traditional sense; it’s a short questionnaire about what goals and questions your child has to help their advisor best guide them through the registration process.  Placement Your child also needs to complete placement exams at least two weeks prior to registration. You can see what placement tests they’re required to take on our  placement testing website.  Test Scores If your child self-reported their ACT and/or SAT test scores, they need to have official scores sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions no later than May 15. Pro Tip:  In addition, any AP scores need to be sent to the Office of Admissions and Records to receive credit for those scores. IB scores need to be sent to the Office of Measurement and Evaluation.  Final Transcript/Schedule Changes Your child needs to send their official, final test scores to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by July 10. Pro Tip:  Don’t have your child send this before they graduate. It needs to list their high school graduation date and final grades from their senior year courses.  Required Immunizations Immunization forms must be submitted to McKinley Health Center by July 1.  Disability-Related Resources Students with disabilities must contact DRES (Disability Resources and Educational Services) to obtain assistance at least six weeks before the first  day of classes. Persuasive Appeals in “Economy” and “Conclusion” - Literature Essay Samples

The autobiography Walden, or Life in the Woods by Henry David Thoreau is a personal narrative describing how and why he performed his experiment of living at Walden Pond, close to nature. â€Å"Economy† describes Thoreau’s personal experience in the beginning of his time at Walden, while â€Å"Conclusion† sums up Thoreau’s beliefs about how people should live their lives. In the different sections of the essay, Thoreau uses the three basic persuasive tactics to convince readers that his beliefs are correct: ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos invokes our rationale that people with personal expertise or experience on a subject are more credible than those without. Logos appeals to the rational part of our thinking because by nature we trust data and the idea of cause and effect. Pathos conjures up what we think and feel about different subjects using word choice (General). Authors try to persuade the reader using these techniques by appealing to various aspects of his or her thinking. In Walden, the section â€Å"Economy† and the section â€Å"Conclusion† share a common theme, which is that one can be self-reliant and live the simplest life possible in order to pursue one’s dream and ultimately ones spiritual freedom. In â€Å"Economy†, Thoreau uses logos and ethos to develop his theme because he uses personal experience and his own records as evidence to support his view, but in â€Å"Conclusion†, he uses pathos because he states his opinion and reveals his passions, thereby appealing to the readers’ emotions and values. A major element of â€Å"Economy† is the use of ethos to establish credibility, since Thoreau is a city man and conducted his experiment in order to gain some experience living in the wilderness. Ethos is the main way that â€Å"Economy† conveys Thoreau’s message that one should be self-reliant and live simply. He tells us that he â€Å"[has lived] alone, in the woods†¦[earning his] living by the labor of [his] hands only. [He has lived there] two years and two months†, and now he is â€Å"a sojourner in civilized life again† (Thoreau 217). Thoreau starts by buying an old, beat-up shanty, and the same morning he moves in, he takes â€Å"down this dwellingand [removes] it to the pond side by small cartloads† (Thoreau 218). When building the house, he transports â€Å"two cartloads of stones up the hill from the pond in [his] arms† (Thoreau 218). In order to preserve food for the winter, he digs a cellar â€Å"in the side of a hill sloping to the southdown through sumac and blackberry roots, and the lowest stain of vegetationto a fine sand† (Thoreau 218). Building a house is probably the most difficult part of making a living independently, but Thoreau, a city man, is successful at it. To both earn money and provide food for himself, he plants â€Å"about two acres and a half of light and sandy soil near [the house] chiefly with beans, but also a small part with potatoes, corn, peas, and turnips† (Thoreau 219), even though one farmer before has said that the land was â€Å"good for nothing but to raise cheeping squirrels on† (Thoreau 219). Although the land near Walden is not the most fertile, Thoreau is still able to provide sufficient food for himself. As far as fuel and staying warm are concerned, he has gotten â€Å"several cords of stumps in plowing†, and the remainder of his fuel consisted of â€Å"dead andunmerchantable wood behind [his] house† (Thoreau 220). The fact that he is able to obtain so much fuel from Walden shows that nature already provides plenty of resources for us that we should make use of. Through his experiences of building his own house, planting his own crops, and gathering fuel from nature, Thoreau builds readers’ respect for him on the subject of being self-reliant and living a simple life. â€Å"Economy† uses some logos to convey the fact that it is possible to live with only the basic human necessities and cultivate a living from one’s own hands. Thoreau meticulously keeps a list of expenses on his house. On his house, he spent a total of â€Å"$28.12  ½Ã¢â‚¬  (Thoreau 219), compared to a new home in Brooklyn, NY, which costs about $2,500 in the 1850s (History). Relying on his own labor, Thoreau got a home for one-hundredth of that price. In addition, he says that he spent â€Å"1.40† on transportation, because he carries â€Å"a good part on [his] back† (Thoreau 219). From his planting, he ends up getting â€Å"twelve bushels of beans, and eighteen bushels of potatoes, besides some peas and sweet corn† (Thoreau 220). Such quantities are definitely enough to sustain a person throughout the year. These statistics show that anyone, even a city man, can obtain the basic human necessities with his own labor. Through the careful keepi ng of records, Thoreau is able to buttress his argument because readers are more likely to believe what numbers tell them. In contrast to â€Å"Economy†, â€Å"Conclusion† relies more on pathos to convey Thoreau’s ideas. Thoreau often directly states his beliefs with a confident or passionate tone. He tells us that â€Å"if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours† (Thoreau 228), revealing a passion and optimism that is not seen in â€Å"Economy†. Although there is no direct scientific evidence to support his statement, Thoreau arouses a strong inspiration in readers. He also tells us in â€Å"Conclusion† that people will become more enlightened about the universe if they simplify their lives. He writes that â€Å"as [a man] simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex, and solitude will not be solitude, nor poverty poverty, nor weakness weakness† (Thoreau 228). Here, he uses irony and pathos to convey his b elief that by living simply, one can turn around normally negative situationspoverty, solitude, weaknessinto positive situations. Thinking about this makes readers feel inspired and more motivated to live a simple but meaningful life, which is the goal of pathos. Thoreau tells us in â€Å"Conclusion† that being self-reliant and living a simple life will ultimately allow one to achieve spiritual freedom: â€Å"[w]e will not be shipwrecked on a vain reality† (Thoreau 228). By â€Å"vain reality†, Thoreau is referring to a reality dominated by material goods. Thoreau believes that a life dominated by many material goods is more miserable than a life dominated by fewer material goods, because material goods cannot give inner freedom. Part of being self-reliant, according to Thoreau, is not trying to imitate others. After all, a â€Å"living dog is better than a dead lion† (Thoreau 228), meaning that a living dog should just be a dog and do useful activities, instead of trying to be a lion and not getting the goal. Thoreau makes readers question whether they have lost touch with themselves. He appeals to our values by using strong and emotional diction, stirring up our thinking about what type of life we want to live. The use of different persuasive tacticslogos, ethos, and pathosinvokes different aspects of human psychology and creates different effects of persuasion in â€Å"Economy† and â€Å"Conclusion†. Thoreau first builds his argument to the rational side of our thinking by conducting the experiment at Walden and keeping careful records to convince the reader of his credibility and paves the way for his conclusion, then ends with strong, passionate words that appeal to our emotions. The use of the three tactics and the way it is set up makes the argument persuasive and provocative, and we leave with the feeling of inspiration. One gets slightly different impressions about Thoreau when reading the two passages, but both selections are equally convincing and powerful.

She developed three departments and appointed a head for each of those departments. In this way, employees were deprived of communicating with Fiona directly (Bell and Marti 2012). They had to depend on head of department in order to let the management know about their issues or concerns. She also implemented new grading system for training consultants without consulting with the employees. Performance bonus and merit pay increase incentives were also closed and these were replaced with annual across-the-board increases. In addition, the friendly work structure created by Tim was also demolished by Fiona as she restructured the workplace where she and the HoDs were allocated with private offices on the ground floor. This hampered the relationship among the higher authorities and employees as they started to believe that XYZ is no more a good place to work (Bell and Marti 2012). Besides, as a result of biasness, employees lost their trust on performance appraisal system. Employees were also not getting proper training and that is why; they started using their older training packages. Besides, Yoga sessions were also dismissed by Fiona as according to her it was a waste of time (McShane et al. 2013). 2. Organizational justice and equity theory of motivation Organizational justice: This theory refers to employee perceptions of equality in an organization. These perceptions can be divided into three categories which are distributive, procedural and interactional justice that contains informational and interpersonal justice. Distributive: Distributive justice helps to understand whether all the employees are being paid fairly or not. It also evaluates if all employees are receiving career opportunities and promotions fairly or not (Mahajan and Benson 2013). Distributive justice was absent in XYZ as employees had to enlist them in the good books Fiona in order to receive better clients, work schedules and promotions. That is why; they were angry and staring calling the system sick and unfair. According to Andrew and Sofian (2012), distributive justice theory is divided in their theories which are utilitarianism, justice as fairness and entitlement theory. Utilitarian theory believes that the only moral compulsion is to maximize the total number of happiness in the world. In general utilitarian will serve in favour of a limited king of distributive activity such as taking away money from the rich and giving it to the poor people. In business organization it can be implemented in way where salary of the CEO will be reduced so that employees can get better salary (Lăzăroiu 2015). On the other hand, justice as fairness is to understand how things will work in a workplace. Entitlement theory states that it would be unfair to interfere in someone elses freedom. Equity theory of motivation This theory states that employees are motivated by fairness in the organization. According to Lăzăroiu et al. (2015), the higher an individuals perception of equity, the more motivated they will be. It also states that if some is treated unfairly in an organization then he will be de-motivated. The same thing is taking place in XYZ consultant as employees are not treated fairly (McShane et al. 2013). Head of the departments along with Fiona never gave importance to their employees and to their decisions. They started making rules, schedules and other decisions without consulting it with the employees. Besides, they are discarded several motivational factors of the organization. As a result, employees started feeling de-motivated and started to quit their jobs (Shields et al. 2015). The core of this theory depends on the principles of balance or equity. While calculating fairness, employee compares the job input in terms of involvement to outcome in terms of compensation. Equity theory perceptions is shown below (Mahajan and Benson 2013), O/I a Under-rewarded (equity tension) O/I a = O/ I b Equity O/I a Over rewarded (equity tension) Equity is professed when the ratio is equal. If this ratio is unequal then it will exhibit equity tension. Assumption of this theory includes that the individuals are concerned not only with their rewards but also with what others get in their comparison. On the other hand, employees normally expect a fair and equitable return for their job and for what they contribute for their organization. Employees who think that they are in a situation that is inequitable will attempt to reduce their inequality by distorting inputs and/or outcomes psychologically (Gelens et al. 2014). On the other hand, in some cases, employees quit the organization after being treated unfairly. Besides, four main propositions of equity theory are, Each employee seeks to maximize their outcomes. Teams and groups have the skill to exploit collective rewards by developing accepted systems for equitably apportioning rewards and expenses among the members. If employees find themselves in inequitable relationship, then they will become distressed. Those people who find them in the state of inequality will try to eliminate it by restoring equality.
